The UN 2030 agenda makes an urgent call to think about ways to achieve a balance between social and economic well-being, with the environment. The way in which we face this new challenge in the country will depend largely on political leadership, with sustainable development as a main priority. Despite having a good external evaluation in international studies and rankings, we are not advanced in this matter and, without a doubt, we must push the agenda with greater effort to advance and overcome the new problems and, especially, the setbacks that have arisen as a consequence of the deep global and national crisis in which we are immersed.

Each winter, Miami Design District invites architects, designers and artists to create an installation on Paseo Ponti,the heart of the neighborhood, with the purpose of generating a unique experience for its visitors. The installation must be integrated into the architecture, vegetation and works of art existing on the site; among them, works by Buckminster Fuller and French designers Ronan & ErwanBourellec and Zaha Hadid.In 2020, the call was made in collaboration with the curators of Anava Projects and invited four teams to reflect upon the topic of energy – both the energy we consume and the energy we contribute to the world – and, at the same time, propose concrete actions to contribute to a more resilient, healthy and equitable Miami.

We at D.epicentre researched, designed, facilitated and documented a design-led event in the form of a workshop, charting the path for the next ten years of corporate citizenship partnerships for a multi-national consulting firm for their India chapter.The participants of the transdisciplinary, design-led , participative workshop comprised individuals and organisations who/which were partners of the multi-national consulting firm and had been able to impact the lives of nearly 700,000 individuals,as well as key stake holders within the organisation. As social impact organisations, the assumption would be that all of them had been working towards different SDGs and one of the intent behind the design was to see what it looked like in their contexts and how creative collaborations among the organisations could strengthen their work towards achieving these goals. So in a way the SDGs were a lens to frame the impact of these organisations in an implicit way.

Diseño inclusivo para el impacto social en entornos de escasos recursos / Inclusive design for social impact in low-resource settings

Developing appropriate assistive technology to be manufactured and maintained within the local context of a low-resource setting,requires alternative design principles and designerly ways to those used when designing in,or for, more resourced regions of the world. This case study offers an empirical account of the design of safariseat, an all-terrain wheelchair that has been designed, tested, manufactured and turned into a sustainable Enterprise in east Africa. The wheelchair was developed with intentions to reduce inequality and help alleviate poverty in low-resource communities by improving users' health, wellbeing and participation in society, whilst creating and facilitating local jobs to support communities. Having developed safariseat with a human-centred design approach, a local mind-set, and prioritisation of usability and affordability, this case study is used to reflecton the applied design principles, practices and processes whilst providing contextual insights for other designers seeking to work in a similar way. The case study covers the topics of designing in a low-resource context, moving from prototype to production line, user testing and outreach, founders, funding and finding a local team, enhancing product value and increasing impact. This paper discusses challenges encountered whilst designing in alow-resource setting, and highlights how local collaboration and partnerships can help lead to the creation of a more sustainable design solution.
Diseño para la sostenibilidad. Soluciones a largo plazo para un problema complejo / Design for Sustainability. Long Term Solutions for a Complex Problem

This article is aimed at an audience of designers and nondesigners that make design related decisions. A background of sustainability is presented and some relevant approaches are discussed in order to understand its meaning and terminology. How sustainability can be measured is presented as well. Then, three approaches to design for sustainability are reviewed that cover from high level decision making to more detailed design guidelines of goods and services. These are the natural step, cradle to cradle design, and life cycle design. the specific characteristics of these approaches are dealtwith, with a focus on how they should be implemented so that they actually enable sustainability. Then, a sort of integration is proposed, in order to clarify specific core aspects that shall be considered when making design related decisions for sustainability. Finally, a focus is put on Chile as a country that is working on its sustainable development. Decisions related to products can be more orless sustainable, and design plays an important role here. Good design decisions for sustainability can be made, both for products made locally and imported.

No one on the planet has been indifferent to this pandemic that has caused a profound shock to people, societies and economies. Governments, international organizations, companies and institutions of all kinds have changed the way they operate.The pandemic has forced us to redefine our plans, pushing us tobe more creative, more connected and coordinated; both to learn from the experiences of others and to collaborate. And it is at this point that adversity looms as an opportunity for Latin America, due to the creative capacity of Latin Americans, which has been recognized by the IDB in its publication “Orange Economy,Innovations you didn't know were from Latin America and the Caribbean” (2017). According to the international organization, the natural and cultural diversity that the region possesses can become a source of creativity, growth and human development. It is therefore necessary to make this talent visible as a valuable asset that allows us to compete in global markets, to generate more employment and development in the countries that make up the region. If we manage to direct this creativity well, changes can be generated. Big changes. New industries and new ventures that can contribute to enhance regional identity and become important engines of the economy, demonstrating that by delivering added value, better returns are obtained and greater wealth is generated. Because creativity generates value and wealth, Jobs and social impact (IDB, 2018). That is why it is important to increase the incentives and efforts that make this reality possible. With this aim, the First Latin American Index Award UDDChallenge was born, an international competition with the aim of stimulating local creativity and project our young people as changemakers, positioning design as the central axis of their proposals..

Enfoque basado en el diseño para construir inclusión social y pluralismo en la juventud / Design-led approach to build social inclusion and pluralism in youth

This article explores the use of design process, methods and pedagogy to promote social inclusion and pluralism among theyouth. It makes the case that design’s opportunity-driven approach combined withabductive reasoning and thinking is bettersuited to tackle uncertain, ambiguous andever evolving wicked problems such as exclusion—bias, discrimination and hate. It further discusses the work of a design-led social impact initiative based in the United States that uses design and creative facilitation to develop programs intended to cultivate a culture of inclusion in schools and classrooms. This paper outlines the use of systemic and individual behavior change strategies predominantly by; 1) developing learning modules, 2) cultivating pluralist competencies in students, and 3) capacity building for educators—providing facilitation tools and training for implementationat scale. Tested with more than 100 students and six educational institutes, the paper talks about the measurement and impact of the learning modules. Experience that fuses contents of diverse subjects and contributes to the collaborative work of the project-based approach. Students ideate proposals to contribute to the betterment of their community, empathizing with the environment and its inhabitants. The results are based on perceptual assessments of the participants and show positive aspects derived from the project experience developed. The conclusions refer to the learning potential of the compass methodology in rural schools with multigrade classroom, valuing collaborative and transversal work, in accordance to the resources of the territory.

The free market model has determined the commercial and industrial development in chile since the 5678s and it has established a speculative logic in the real estate business. in addition to its effects on the morphology and demography of the city, the development of building projects by public-private alliances with minimal regulatory participation of the state has had an impact on the questionable quality of high-density housing projects in terms of thermal comfort and energy efficiency. this makes it possible to establish a relationship between regulatory deficiencies and energy poverty, a phenomenon made more evident by the growing job insecurity, rising cost of living and economic instability of recent years

The reflection that we make as educators is to question where we contribute more, whether in the technical or in the ethical. Our conclusion is that both are indissoluble. Contributing to the formation of character, generates emotionally solid students, kind, frank, reflective, and motivated to learn individuals; therefore, happier in the professional path they chose. We must support the development of prudence in students, which is the virtue to contribute to the common good, a fundamental objective of education in the field of design, because it motivates us to stop and observe, consciously and with distance, the constant invasion of objects, images and messages that perhaps represent nothing to us. El futuro que anhelamos / The future we hope for

Design is a valuable discipline for the creation of innovative public policies to advance the objectives and goals of the 2030 Agenda. The 17 SDGs are multidimensional and their challenges create the need to seek for increasingly creative, innovative, sustainable and egalitarian solutions, for which design is an indispensable tool. This multifaceted discipline must play an important role in the great challenge of generating socially fairer initiatives and products, healthier and more environmentally sustainable economies. One more example that shows that, regardless of our occupation, we all can and should contribute in achieving the 2030 Agenda. Design is definitely becoming more important worldwide, not just in Latin American. It has deepened its impact in various areas. Innovation in the world of design is critical to improve the quality of life of communities, and can become a very important part of deepening work for sustainable development.
