Item Diseño inclusivo para el impacto social en entornos de escasos recursos / Inclusive design for social impact in low-resource settings(Universidad del Desarrollo. Facultad de Diseño, 2021) Shaw, CaraDeveloping appropriate assistive technology to be manufactured and maintained within the local context of a low-resource setting, requires alternative design principles and designerly ways to those used when designing in,or for, more resourced regions of the world. This case study offers an empirical account of the design of safariseat, an all-terrain wheelchair that has been designed, tested, manufactured and turned into a sustainable Enterprise in east Africa. The wheelchair was developed with intentions to reduce inequality and help alleviate poverty in low-resource communities by improving users' health, wellbeing and participation in society, whilst creating and facilitating local jobs to support communities. Having developed safariseat with a human-centred design approach, a local mind-set, and prioritisation of usability and affordability, this case study is used to reflecton the applied design principles, practices and processes whilst providing contextual insights for other designers seeking to work in a similar way. The case study covers the topics of designing in a low-resource context, moving from prototype to production line, user testing and outreach, founders, funding and finding a local team, enhancing product value and increasing impact. This paper discusses challenges encountered whilst designing in alow-resource setting, and highlights how local collaboration and partnerships can help lead to the creation of a more sustainable design solution.Item Ecosalmón: por un océano libre de residuos industriales / Ecosalmón: for an ocean free of industrial waste(Universidad del Desarrollo: Facultad de Diseño, 2021) Cox, OsvaldoThe proposal by the designer Osvaldo Cox seeks to generate a new way of growing salmon in the southern zone, exhibiting an innovative design of the productive unit (cage) in which the fish are raised. in addition, it aims to reduce the impact that this industry has on the marine ecosystem.Item Un traje a la medida para el planeta / A tailored suit for the planet(Universidad del Desarrollo. Establecer las preguntas de diseño, replantear el desafío / What can we do for design? Setting the design questions, reframing the challenge(Universidad del Desarrollo. Facultad de Diseño, 2021) Maccagnani, Simona; Weirich, GabrielNotwithstanding the long-term relation between design and sustainability and the design community’s quick reaction to the 5676 agenda, recent events have renewed the sense of urgency for the need to review the relationship between design and the SDGS.The exceptional times we are experiencing, with their increasing complexity and constant accelerating environmental and cultural nonlinear transformation, require of us a reflection to our default position towards well-being (life-, work-, opportunities …), a greater understanding of sustainable development and a critical perspective on what design can do. Reflecting on “what design can do” we should realize that design is multifold, that there is not one nor “the” design interrelating with the global goals - on a clearer look at design it unfolds inmultiple identities and multiple creative intelligences each of them with its own set of interacting codes with the SDGS.against this backdrop four design identities were put in the spotlight for discovery and discussion: design as facilitator- design as two-phase catalyst – design as savior – designas common ground. exploring these identities in association to the global goals intends to shine a light on the role that design histories and presents can play in transforming our worldItem Greeners: vegetales en miniatura con beneficios gigantes / Greeners: Miniature vegetables with giant benefits(Universidad del Desarrollo: Facultad de Diseño, 2021) Hardessen, CatalinaThis initiative seeks to inform people about the virtues of microgreens and educate about their enormous health benefits. design is the means to attract users, providing aesthetic value to the environments and a connection with natureItem Proyecto de iluminación instalación urbana. Facultad de Diseño, 2021) Shahid, HinaThis article explores the use of design process, methods and pedagogy to promote social inclusion and pluralism among theyouth. It makes the case that design’s opportunity-driven approach combined withabductive reasoning and thinking is bettersuited to tackle uncertain, ambiguous andever evolving wicked problems such as exclusion—bias, discrimination and hate. It further discusses the work of a design-led social impact initiative based in the United States that uses design and creative facilitation to develop programs intended to cultivate a culture of inclusion in schools and classrooms. This paper outlines the use of systemic and individual behavior change strategies predominantly by; 1) developing learning modules, 2) cultivating pluralist competencies in students, and 3) capacity building for educators—providing facilitation tools and training for implementationat scale. Tested with more than 100 students and six educational institutes, the paper talks about the measurement and impact of the learning modules. Experience that fuses contents of diverse subjects and contributes to the collaborative work of the project-based approach. Students ideate proposals to contribute to the betterment of their community, empathizing with the environment and its inhabitants. The results are based on perceptual assessments of the participants and show positive aspects derived from the project experience developed. The conclusions refer to the learning potential of the compass methodology in rural schools with multigrade classroom, valuing collaborative and transversal work, in accordance to the resources of the territory.Item El futuro que anhelamos / The future we hope for(Universidad del Desarrollo: Facultad de Diseño, 2021) Rucks, SilviaDesign is a valuable discipline for the creation of innovative public policies to advance the objectives and goals of the 2030 Agenda. The 17 SDGs are multidimensional and their challenges create the need to seek for increasingly creative, innovative, sustainable and egalitarian solutions, for which design is an indispensable tool. This multifaceted discipline must play an important role in the great challenge of generating socially fairer initiatives and products, healthier and more environmentally sustainable economies. One more example that shows that, regardless of our occupation, we all can and should contribute in achieving the 2030 Agenda. Design is definitely becoming more important worldwide, not just in Latin American. It has deepened its impact in various areas.
