Abstract
Most studies concerning the origins of parliament in the Spanish kingdoms have focused on the social changes in the composition of these royal assemblies, especially from the thirteenth century.
This paper will instead analyse consultation, assent and deliberation at large gatherings of kings and nobles in the twelfth century to suggest this phenomenon as a key process to understand the
development of the cortes from the curias plenas.
