This project aims to address the issue of waste generated by the sea urchin industry in our country, while also raising awareness about the potential of viewing design processes as a methodology capable of contributing sustainable cycles to traditional linear production processes. It also seeks to highlight the importance of artisanal fishing in our country and its role in maintaining the balance of underwater ecosystems. Thus, the question arises: Is it feasible to develop a biobased material from the shells and spines discarded by the sea urchin industry in Chile? Despite the sea urchin industry representing approximately 50% of global exports each year and being considered one of the most prolific in the world, it receives limited attention in Chile. The current focus on environmental issues and the need to explore new economic approaches have led designers to create innovative materials and establish cyclical processes in a context where linear production methods were prevalent. The goal is to contribute to the field of design by developing a biomaterial based on Calcium Carbonate obtained from the waste of this industry, which can be used as a component in various industries
