The ecological crisis, post-pandemic and social and political conflicts contribute to the rising price and scarcity of traditional materials. In addition, self-production and the democratisation of advanced technologies have inspired communities of designers to seek new ways of thinking, making and researching design. The research section, led by Jimena Alarcón and Amilton Arruda, brought together twenty-three materials researchers from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, and the United States. The special issue was published at the end of 2022 and is available for download on Base's electronic platform.
