Item Acute prevertebral calcific tendinitis: a source of non-surgical acute cervical pain.(Sage Publications, 2014) Silva F., Claudio; Soffia, Pablo; Pruzzo, EddaBACKGROUND: Prevertebral calcific tendinitis results from calcium hydroxyapatite crystal deposits in the longus colli muscles, which induce symptoms similar to some surgically-treated conditions, such as retropharyngeal abscesses. Imaging techniques are critical for accurate diagnosis. PURPOSE: To describe the computed tomography (CT) findings associated with prevertebral calcific tendinitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis performed in an 18-month period, searching for patients with neck CT and reports with diagnosis of "calcific longus collis tendinitis" or "prevertebral calcific tendinitis". CT images and clinical data available in the medical records were analyzed. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-four examinations were performed in the period studied. Nine patients who fulfilled inclusion criteria were identified and their CT imaging characteristics are presented. Six presented with calcific deposits in the right longus colli muscle. CT matched the clinical pain lateralization in all cases. Eight patients had no significant enhancement post injection of contrast media. CONCLUSION: Prevertebral calcific tendinitis is a cause of acute cervical pain that clinically mimics a retropharyngeal abscess, however on neck CT has a characteristic appearance. Correct identification of this pathologic condition will help avoiding unnecessary invasive procedures.Item Computed tomography imaging of complications of acute cholecystitis(2018) Schiappacasse, Giancarlo; Soffia, Pablo; Silva, Claudio; Villacrés, FabianAcute cholecystitis (AC) is a frequent complication of biliary cholelithiasis. Although ultrasound is the first diagnostic imaging procedure, frequently the initial imaging modality is computed tomography (CT). Therefore, familiarization of CT findings in AC and potential related complications are extremely important. This pictorial essay reviews a broad spectrum of complications related to AC and its key findings in CT.Item Radioprotección al día en radiología diagnóstica: Conclusiones de la Conferencia Iberoamericana de Protección Radiológica en Medicina (CIPRaM) 2016(Sociedad Chilena de Radiología, 2017) Soffia, Pablo; Ubeda, Carlos; Miranda, Patricia; Rodríguez, JoseThe aim of this article was to summarize the conclusions reached by a panel of Ibero-American experts regarding the five most relevant problems in the area of Radiological Protection (RP) in diagnostic radiology in Latin America. The topic was analyzed within the framework of the Ibero-American Conference on Radiological Protection in Medicine (CIPRaM) 2016, held in Madrid, Spain, between October 18 and 20, 2016, together with an analysis of the current situation of our country in these issues. The CIPRaM was addressed to all those involved in RP in medicine, including physicians, technicians, physicists, regulatory agents, health authorities and the general public. In conclusion, the most relevant problems were the lack of justification for the studies, the lack of culture of dose optimization of radiological techniques, the need to deepen the educational efforts of health personnel, the need to establish diagnostic reference levels in the region and further promote a PR culture and greater risk-benefit dialogue. As indicators of follow-up, it was proposed to quantify the number of countries with clinical guidelines for referral clinicians, the number of countries with quality manuals in use, the number of guidelines for conducting examinations adopted, the number of countries in the region with national diagnostic reference levels, the number of Educational programs, actions and campaigns in RP for each national society and finally, the number of countries with an updated regulatory framework according to the international basic safety standards.
