Streptococcus pyogenes: What are we doing in our country?

Infection by Streptococcus pyogenes has been increasing in Chile and the world. Infection by this agent can give very varied manifestations, from non-invasive infections to other invasive ones that threaten life. The aim of this article is to review the epidemiological changes that have occurred in our country in recent times, microbiological aspects, the different clinical manifestations, mainly invasive ones, in order to promote a high clinical suspicion, early, to establish its adequate and rational management. La infección por Streptococcus pyogenes ha ido en aumento en Chile y el mundo. La infección por este agente puede dar manifestaciones muy variadas, desde infecciones no invasoras a otras que amenazan la vida. El objetivo de este artículo es hacer una revisión sobre los cambios epidemiológicos ocurridos en nuestro país en el último tiempo, aspectos microbiológicos, revisar las distintas manifestaciones clínicas, principalmente las invasoras, con el fin de fomentar una alta sospecha clínica, de manera precoz, y establecer un manejo apropiado y racional.
