It frequently generates anxiety in the family and in health care professionals. A thorough anamnesis and careful genital inspection can give important diagnostic hints; however, there are cases in which the cause remains doubtful and a complete gynecological evaluation (including cultures and vaginoscopy) is necessary. Therefore, the attending physician should always consider less frequent diagnoses in order to perform the necessary studies in a sequential and rational manner.
